Lena Mattsson's new experimental film "Not without gloves" reveal the common identity that we share in the experience and memory of the landscapes we come from, which in this particular case is also Mattson’s own origin. The film problematize a romantic nature experience through various distortions, interpretations and questioning of the original place. Instead, we are allowed to enter as visitors into a magical world. Where Mattsson highlights in a poetic way the COVID-19 pandemic and global environmental change.

Director, Nordiska Akvarellmuseet, Skärhamn, Sweden. Lena Mattsson is primarily a video and performance artist, but she began as a painter. Her works frequently allude to art history and cinema. In many years, she has had numerous exhibitions and film screenings in Sweden and internationally, including the solo exhibitions In the Eye of the Beholder at Moderna Museet Malmö, and A Small Fairytale at Malmö Konsthall. She is recognised for her way of highlighting and challenging injustices, faults and conflicts in our society. In several of these works she participates actively, identifying strongly with the most deeply afflicted, and referring them to her own experiences. This highly personal, painterly and poetic interweaving of life and art gives Lena Mattsson’s works a unique expression.

Lena Mattson’s impressive artistic career stretches through decades including numerous appearances in renowned institutions around the world. In her work life itself, that which is private to us and memories are woven together. The experienced reality shares the same surface as the recounted. One feels that the works are abstractions of the culmination of (perhaps) specific events that show neither their beginning nor their end. So they invite us to relate and connect.
